The Coming of Age Programme is designed for young people of about twelve/thirteen years old; it takes place at about the time they begin Secondary School. The programme covers a period of about eighteen months and culminates in a Sunday Service where the Young People take centre stage. We invite the President of our Denomination to the service as well as the friends and family of the young people. The Programme is designed to recognise that they are beginning their journey to adulthood when they will make their own decisions about religion and to take responsibility for their spirituality.
During the months of preparation the young people learn about other faiths and attend other places of worship. They meet with older members of the Unitarian Church to ask them their beliefs and why they are Unitarians. They spend a week-end in the Unitarian Centre in Derbyshire in the company of other young Unitarians. We encourage them to think about their own beliefs and to write them in the form of their individual Credo. They design a Wayside Pulpit that is posted outside our Church as well as the order of Service for their special day.
The Service is followed by a party in the Church for the congregation. The Service is designed to mark the development of the young people to independence and to give them a day to feel special among their community.
